CONGRESSMAN BOUCHER SECURES $1 MILLION IN FEDERAL FUNDS FOR NEW WATER SYSTEM IN WYTHE COUNTY

Federal Funds Will Provide 46 Homes with Public Water Service for the First Time

(Washington, D.C.) – U.S. Representative Rick Boucher announced today that, at his urging, the U.S. Department of Agriculture through its Rural Development Agency has provided a total of more than $1 million to construct a new water system in Wythe County. Of that total amount, Wythe County is receiving a federal grant of $426,000 and a low-interest federal loan of $640,000 to construct a new water system to serve the residents of Old School Road, which is located between Fort Chiswell and Ivanhoe.

“With the benefit of the federal funds, public water service will be provided for the first time to 46 homes in Wythe County which currently do not have access to safe and reliable public drinking water,” Boucher said.

Currently, residents of Old School Road rely on private wells or cisterns, which can become contaminated. With the benefit of the federal funds, Wythe County will install 11,800 feet of water lines and one pump station along Old School Road to provide safe and reliable water service to 46 homes.

Adequate and reliable public water service is essential to maintaining Southwest Virginia’s excellent quality of life and to achieving our economic development goals for the region. Today’s announcement of $1 million for Wythe County represents a significant step in our ongoing work to expand water systems throughout the region,” Boucher concluded.
