Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, Jr. (D-Mich.) released the following statement after today’s announced settlement in the Pigford case.

"I applaud the effort of this administration to settle the remaining late filer claims in the Pigford litigation.  After the passage of legislation authorizing the settlement of these claims in 2008, Congress appropriated $100 million to jumpstart this process with the understanding that additional funds would be required.  Today’s announcement of a settlement agreement allows Congress to proceed with appropriating the remaining $1.15 billion.  After speaking with Agriculture Secretary Vilsack today, I am pleased with his efforts and commitment to reach a quick resolution of these longstanding, overdue claims."
