House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, Jr. (D-Mich.) and 80 other members of Congress today called upon the administration to designate Haiti for Temporary Protected Status (TPS). TPS allows nationals of designated countries where extraordinary and temporary conditions exist, such as earthquakes, floods, or armed conflict, to remain temporarily in the United States until their home country can safely handle their return. This status was granted in the past, for example, to nationals of Honduras after Hurricane Mitch devastated their home country.
