Congressman Mike Ross "Never Far from Home"

Each spring, a nation-wide high school arts competition is sponsored by the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives. The Artistic Discovery Contest is an opportunity to recognize and encourage the artistic talent in the nation, as well as in each Congressional District, and is open to all high school students.

The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Since then, over 650,000 high school students have been involved with the nationwide competition.

The first place winner each year will receive a roundtrip airfare for three to attend the opening of the national exhibition in Washington, D.C., and will have his or her work displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol.  The second and third place works will be displayed in my Hot Springs congressional office.

I am continually impressed at the skill and talent our young people possess.  To walk through the Capitol building and see the incredible talent from across the nation is quite a sight to see.  I am honored to recognize these students every year and am proud to help show off the talent from Arkansas’s Fourth Congressional District to the hundreds of thousands of visitors from across the world that visit the U.S. Capitol each year.

The winners for 2009 were:  1st place – Ruben Gay of Lake Hamilton High School; 2nd place – Christine Jacinto of Pine Bluff High School; and, 3rd place – Hawk Clift of Fountain Lake High School.
