One of the greatest privileges I have as a Congressman is nominating young men and women to the United States Service Academies.  Every year, rising seniors apply for a Congressional Nomination to obtain one of the finest educations in the nation.  The dedication of these young people amazes me every year.

 

President Ronald Reagan once said, “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction.  We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream.  It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.”

 

The spirit of service among our fellow Americans ensures that the values of freedom, community and democracy are strengthened here at home.  The United States remains the best example of what can be achieved in a nation that is free.  With the threats to freedom I feel it is imperative that our most committed young people are afforded the opportunity to serve their country in such an essential role as a cadet in a service academy.

This is a detailed and selective process that allows the academy to offer admission to the best and brightest candidates in the country.  Each applicant competing for a nomination from Congressman Linder must meet the following eligibility requirements as of July 1 of the year of admission to a service academy:

It is an important decision to attend one of the academies that prepare America’s young men and women to become professional officers.  There will be a lot of hard work, early mornings and late nights, and you will be held to the highest ideals of duty, honor, and loyalty.  I am sure that you have many questions about the nomination process, the admissions process at each academy, and what life will be like at one of the service academies.  You can find many answers to those questions below:

 

 

A nomination is required in order to receive an appointment.  Applying for a nomination is a separate process from applying to the academies.  Members of Congress are granted authority by law to nominate young adults to the following United States Service academies: The United States Military Academy; The United States Air Force Academy; The United States Naval Academy; The United States Merchant Marine Academy.

 

The United States Coast Guard Academy does not require a nomination.

 

 

Each applicant competing for a nomination from Congressman Linder must meet the following eligibility requirements as of July 1 of the year of admission to a service academy:  

 

 

A service academy in many ways is similar to a college or university.  The main difference is the agreement made between the cadet and academy of service after education.  By accepting an appointment to a service academy, a cadet agrees to serve his or her country after graduation.

 

 

A nomination to the service academy is only one of the components necessary for a completed application with the service academy of your choice.  A nomination from Congressman Linder does not guarantee admittance to the service academy of your choice.   After a completed application is submitted, and a nomination is received, a candidate is reviewed by the chosen service academy admissions office.  At that time an applicant may be appointed to his or her chosen service academy.

 

 

The Academy Panel is a group of community leaders chosen by Congressman Linder to assist him with the review process of applicants.   The Academy Panel usually consists of educators, business leaders, civic leaders, and military personnel who conduct individual applicant interviews and make recommendations to the Congressman about the candidates and the nomination process.

 

 

Each candidate who meets the requirements for the nomination process is asked to meet with the Academy Panel for an interview.  The purpose of the interview is to determine the candidate’s commitment to serving his or her country and to review the candidate’s experience and education.

 

 

When a service academy issues an offer of appointment, the service academy contacts Congressman Linder and usually a letter sent out to the candidate.  At that time, the Congressman contacts the candidate and informs the individual that he or she has received an appointment.  Most notifications of appointment occur anywhere between early- February through late spring.

Candidates residing in Georgia's Seventh Congressional District seeking a nomination from Congressman Linder must file all required information with Congressman Linder’s District Office no later than 5:00pm, Friday, October 22, 2010.
