On December 15, 1818, the legislature created
Gwinnett
County. The county was named after Button Gwinnett, who was one of the three citizens of Georgia to sign the Declaration of Independence. Gwinnett’s borders shifted several times until it reached its present form situated on 437 square miles of land roughly 30 miles northeast of
Atlanta.

Park, is located on the border of Gwinnett and
Dekalb
County. For outdoor recreation, the
Chattahoochee
River serves as much of the western border.
