On the Peninsula: from cancer therapy to Bay research
Senator Warner highlighted cutting-edge scientific research underway on Virginia's Peninsula today.
He visited Hampton University's new Proton Cancer Therapy Institute, a cutting-edge, $225 million treatment facility that can target and kill cancer cells. When it opens next month, it'll be the first of its kind for Virginia and only the eighth in the entire country.
Senator Warner told reporters the HU cancer center is a remarkable accomplishment.
"Warner applauded HU President William R. Harvey for his 'audacity' to have the grand vision of creating the center. Seeing it go from idea to construction to patient treatment within six years is amazing, Warner said, adding that the institute adds one more jewel to the crown of HU," the Daily Press reported.

Later, the Senator met with several dozen local elected officials and community and business leaders at a luncheon in Mathews and Gloucester counties before traveling to the Virginia Institute of Marine Science at Gloucester Point to learn the latest on VIMS' efforts to help restore the health of the Chesapeake Bay.
VIMS is the graduate school in marine science for the College of William & Mary. Chartered in 1940, VIMS is currently among the largest marine research and education centers in the United States.
