CHAMBLISS, LINDER, PRICE PROMOTE FAIRTAX AT ATLANTA PRESS CONFERENCE

April 3, 2007

U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) and U.S. Rep. John Linder (R-GA) held a FairTax press conference in Atlanta to promote the principles of the FairTax legislation and update supporters about the bill’s status in Congress. Joining them were U.S. Rep. Tom Price (R-GA), Ken Hoagland, National Communications Director, Americans for FairTax, and other supporters of the FairTax. The press conference focused on the need for Congress to enact fundamental tax reform legislation.

“I have heard from many Georgians about the FairTax and I am proud to be the primary sponsor of this legislation in the U.S. Senate,” said Chambliss. “As we have heard today, there is strong grassroots support for the FairTax which would bring fairness and simplicity to our cumbersome and bureaucratic tax code – and that’s what taxpayers deserve.”

Representative Linder stated, “I am excited to join my good friend Saxby Chambliss to celebrate his introduction of the FairTax in the Senate. The progress we have made since first introducing the FairTax is simply amazing. I introduced the House version this year on January 4th with more original co-sponsors than ever before, and the number of co-sponsors in the House has more than doubled in only 3 months. Now we are watching Senator Chambliss introduce the Senate version with 3 original cosponsors.” Linder added, “I am confident that congressional support will continue to grow because the grassroots growth has been phenomenal, and it is obvious that Americans are way ahead of the politicians.”

"Americans deserve a fair tax code – one that doesn’t require a team of lawyers, tax experts and months of hard work to decipher,” said Price. “The decent American people have been willing to pay more than their fair share despite the obvious and unnecessary complexity of our modern tax system. They should be allowed to take home their entire paycheck and decide for themselves how they wish to save, spend and invest their own money. Decades of tax reforms have done nothing to undo the burden our current system places on the American family. The FairTax, a national retail sales tax would replace the entire income tax system, end the IRS, capture the underground economy and ensure greater economic prosperity for every American.”

The FairTax would shift the federal government's method of revenue collection from income to personal consumption. The FairTax would repeal all federal personal income taxes, corporate income taxes, payroll taxes, self-employment taxes, capital gains taxes, and gift and estate taxes and replace these taxes with a revenue-neutral 23 percent personal consumption tax on all retail sales of new goods and services.
