Report Says More Attention Must Be Focused on Homegrown Terrorism

September 10, 2010 (WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement following the release of the Bipartisan Policy Center's National Security Preparedness Group report "Assessing the Terrorist Threat":

“The report paints a stark picture of the evolving terrorist threat since the attacks of September 11, 2001. Today’s jihadists do not fit any particular ethnic, economic, educational, or social background. Hence, we must maximize our efforts to counter violent extremism, radicalization, and recruitment in the United States and, at the same time, stand up to xenophobia and ethnic scapegoating. Now more than ever, we need to come together as Americans, unified in our commitment to peace and security and dedicated to fostering a more resilient nation.”

The full Committee on Homeland Security will be holding a hearing on the report on Wednesday, September 15th, 2010 at 10am in 311 Cannon House Office Building.
