Congresswoman Suzanne Kosmas was sworn into office on January 6, 2009 and is serving her first term as U.S. Representative for Florida’s 24th Congressional District.  The 24th District covers parts of Brevard, Orange, Seminole and Volusia Counties, including the University of Central Florida’s main campus in Orlando, Daytona International Speedway, and Kennedy Space Center.

Suzanne’s experiences over the course of more than 35 years as a New Smyrna Beach resident have given her a great understanding of the issues important to Central Floridians.  She raised her family here, instilling the core values of integrity, accountability, and responsibility in her four children, Paul, Michael, David, and Kristen.  In building a successful small business, Suzanne learned to focus on common-sense solutions to address the problems we all face.  And her work as a community leader, including serving as Chair of the Board for the United Way of Volusia County, has given her insight into the many difficulties facing Central Florida’s families.

Since entering office, Suzanne has stood up against politics as usual in Washington by fighting to end automatic pay raises for Members of Congress and opposing bailouts.  Due to her common-sense, independent voice, Suzanne has been named one of the Ten Most Moderate U.S. Representatives (National Journal, 2/26/10).

One of Suzanne’s top priorities is minimizing the human spaceflight gap and protecting NASA jobs.  As a member of the House Science & Technology Committee, Suzanne has quickly become a leading supporter of human spaceflight, with the Orlando Sentinel naming her one of Florida’s “top space advocates” (Orlando Sentinel, 04/28/09).

Suzanne also serves on the House Financial Services Committee where she has been working on common-sense measures to free up the flow of credit and to address the nation’s financial crisis.

In addition, Suzanne has utilized her experience as a former small business owner to become a leading advocate for small business issues.  She has introduced or sponsored legislation to institute a payroll tax holiday, to support small business incubators, and to cut taxes for entrepreneurs.

Suzanne has also worked to improve and protect the benefits for veterans and our men and women in uniform, including leading the fight to make the new Orlando VA Medical Center a reality.

Prior to her election to Congress, Suzanne served four consecutive terms as a member of the Florida House of Representatives before being term-limited. In the state legislature, she earned praise for her bipartisan, common-sense approach to government.

Throughout her work to represent her district, Suzanne never forgets to put the needs of her constituents first.  She travels across the district at every opportunity in order to hear first-hand what the most pressing issues are for Central Florida’s communities.  She always keeps in mind that her job is to help ensure a prosperous future for generations to come.
