TSA Training Needs Improved Standards

November 16, 2010 (WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement in response to a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office of the Inspector General (OIG) report entitled "Transportation Security Administration’s Management of Its Screening Workforce Training Program Can Be Improved". The report found some process and documentation inconsistencies with TSA’s training regime.

“I thank the OIG for this important assessment of TSA’s management of the screener training program and urge TSA to implement these sensible recommendations immediately. In light of recent aviation security events and the new pat down process for screening passengers, training is more important than ever in both securing the aviation system and maintaining suitable privacy and customer service standards. Training is the critical lynchpin in an effective aviation security program. Without suitable training, technology and established screening processes are ineffective.”
