Rep. Luján Highlights Announcement of New Solar Facility in Questa PDF Print E-mail

February 23, 2010

Washington D.C. – Today, Chevron Mining and Chevron Ventures Technology announced plans to redevelop the tailing site of its molybdenum mine in Questa to build a new solar technology facility. The facility will include approximately 175 solar panels on approximately 20 acres of the Questa mines tailing site, making the new facility one of the largest solar installments in the world. Kit Carson Electric Cooperative will purchase the power produced by the one megawatt solar facility.

“New Mexico is well positioned to be a leader in a clean energy economy, and I am encouraged by this investment in clean energy in our state,” Rep. Luján said. “This project is an excellent use of impacted lands that will benefit rural New Mexico through energy generation and economic development.”

In addition to the new solar facility, Chevron plans to evaluate various soil cover depths at the tailing facility—an evaluation that will serve to prepare for the closing of the tailing facility.
