LEWIS BACKS FLAKE, ADDITIONAL FISCALLY CONSERVATIVE MEMBERS FOR APPROPRIATIONS COMMITTEE SEATS

November 5th, 2010 - -
Lewis Backs Flake, Additional Fiscally Conservative Members for Appropriations Committee Seats

WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Appropriations Ranking Member Jerry Lewis today reiterated his support for additional fiscally conservative members to fill open Appropriations Committee seats, and offered his support for Rep. Jeff Flake’s bid to become a member of the Committee. In a pre-election opinion piece published in Politico last month, Lewis stated that the House will face many challenges in the coming Congress to rein in federal spending to get the nation onto a responsible and sustainable financial path. In the editorial, Lewis expressed his support for adding conservative members to the Appropriations committee to help in the fight for these spending cuts.

Today, Lewis followed up on that call by throwing his support behind Rep. Flake for an Appropriations Committee seat.

The statement by Lewis follows:

“The American people have demanded a change in the spending habits of Washington, and they clearly want an end to the massive deficits and debt that are stifling our economy. Our new Republican majority will meet these challenges head-on, will engage in aggressive budget oversight, and enact significant spending cuts across the entire federal government.

“The Appropriations Committee will be ground-zero in this fight. The Congress and the country would be well served by adding additional conservative voices to the Appropriations Committee to help battle against wasteful and unnecessary spending.

“There are numerous talented and capable fiscally conservative Members and incoming freshmen who would make many valuable contributions to our Committee.  While these decisions will be made by the Steering Committee, I will encourage the addition of Republicans to the Appropriations Committee – including Congressman Flake – who are ready to roll up their sleeves and work with their colleagues to conduct critical and time-consuming oversight, and get down to the serious work of cutting government spending.”
