(WASHINGTON) – U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, will speak today, Wednesday, July 14, at a rally for freedom and human rights in North Korea on the West Lawn of the Capitol. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:
“I would like to commend all of the courageous individuals and organizations around the world standing up for basic human rights and freedoms in North Korea, including the right to worship freely.
“Earlier this year an American citizen, Aijalon Mahli Gomes, was arrested by North Korean thugs and thrown into the gulag with other prisoners of conscience. His alleged crime? Bearing witness to his Christian faith.
“The brutality and intolerance of the North Korean regime knows no bounds, and the threat it poses to U.S. national security and that of our allies has grown extreme.
“From its attack on the Cheonan to its illegal arms shipments and its targeting of dissidents living abroad, the North Korean regime has proven its desire to wreak havoc abroad.
“The United States can and must call the North Korean regime what it indisputably is: a state-sponsor of terrorism.”
Note: Ros-Lehtinen is expected to address the rally at approximately 12:15 p.m. this afternoon.
