Ros-Lehtinen Says UN Report on North Korea Will Illustrate Need for Change in U.S. Policy toward Pyongyang

(WASHINGTON) – U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, commented today on the expected release of a United Nations Security Council report on North Korea’s proliferation of nuclear and missile technology to Iran, Syria, and Burma. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:

“This forthcoming report should be a wake-up call for the U.S. and other responsible nations.

“It is clear that North Korea has continued to escalate its aggressive actions, which include the sinking of the South Korean warship Cheonan and reports that it has stepped up its nuclear weapons program.

“Instead of continuing its failed strategy of seeking to engage the regime in endless negotiation, the administration must ratchet up pressure on Pyongyang. At the upcoming G-20 summit in Seoul, President Obama must persuade the heads of state to call for the imposition of new and effective UN Security Council sanctions on North Korea.

“In addition, the U.S. and other responsible nations must use every means at their disposal to apply pressure on Pyongyang, the first step being to re-list North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism.

“We must act quickly and firmly to stop North Korea’s proliferation before it ends up costing American lives and those of our allies.”
