TODAY: Committee to Consider Child Nutrition Bill

Note: The Committee will resume consideration of H.R. 5504 at 10am on Thursday, July 15.

Today, the Committee will consider the Improving Nutrition for America's Children Act to expand access and improve the nutritional quality of meals in schools and child care.

The legislation would help set American children on a path of healthy eating and healthy living at a time when approximately 22 percent of the nation’s children lack access to quality food and one in three children are overweight or obese. Today, over 32 million children rely on federal child nutrition programs.

H.R. 5504 would dramatically expand access for millions of children to healthy meals year-round in schools, child care, and community based settings, and for the first time, establish nutrition standards for foods sold outside of the cafeteria.

As both an involved parent and professional, involved in aimproved school nutrition, advocating for improved school nutrition through school yard gardening and science night events,I strongly urge that increased funding be added to the CNR bill today.

It would come, none too soon, as we are sadly hearing that my generation (I am 52), will most likely have a longer life expectancy than my son's generation (he is 11 years old), due to the chemicals and non-food ingredients, that flood our food system.

I do hope that when discussing alternates to fluid milk for those who are lactose intolerant (a surprisingly large percentage of school children are) they will examine the above condition. Nutritionally equivalent? Does that mean the same amount of saturated fat?? When water, potable water, is encouraged, large producers stand to lose a little. I do hope that this situation will not be influenced by large industry and the gains these producers realize will always be second to safeguarding our children's wellness.
