Visiting Washington

Washington, D.C., our nation's capital, offers many opportunities for sightseeing and visits to memorials and historic government buildings and landmarks. While the following locations offer public tours (specific hours and information are available on their web sites) my office is able to arrange Congressional tours through my online tour request form. United States Capitol tours are available through this office, Monday through Friday. Once you complete the online form, someone in my office will be in contact with you to arrange a tour. For the White House, you will need to follow the special instructions in the "White House Tour Information" section below.

WHITE HOUSE TOUR INFORMATION

The White House has resumed public tours on a limited basis, and we will make every effort to accomodate your request. White House tours operate Tuesday through Saturday. Please know that White House tours require as much as six months advance notice, and the White House does not confirm tours until one month before the requested tour date. Because of security concerns and overwhelming interest, a White House tour cannot be guaranteed. If you live in Georgia's Seventh Congressional District, you can place a tour request by completing the "Online Tour Request Form" or by calling (202) 225-4272.

SECURITY INFORMATION

Following the events of September 11, 2001, our nation's Capital has undergone significant changes, and it continues to be a challenging time for all of us. New security measures have been set in place impacting the accessibility of area attractions. Parking is very limited, and public transportation is encouraged. Security screening at federal buildings, monuments, and museums prohibit the following items: aerosol/non-aerosol sprays, food/beverages, oversized bags of any kind, knives of any length, razors, box cutters, mace, and pepper spray. While some of these changes may be an inconvenience to you, I am confident that these new measures will help to ensure a safe and enjoyable visit to our nation's Capital. Feel free to stop by my office in 1026 Longworth House Office Building to pick up passes to the House and Senate galleries to observe debate on the floor of Congress. In the House, children under 10 are allowed in the gallery if accompanied by an adult.  Children must be six years old to be admitted to the Senate gallery.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

There is no admission charge for most of the monuments and museums, but come prepared for a lot of walking. Taxis, buses, and the MetroRail subway are available every day for transportation to Capitol Hill and the various attractions.  The Metro is a safe and affordable way to get around town.  The closest Metro stop to the U.S. Capitol is "Capitol South".
