In this meeting of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Sheldon spoke about his intention to propose a measure to clarify the authority of bankruptcy courts to provide pre-trial foreclosure mediations. Whitehouse held a field hearing on the mediation programs in October, and heard testimony about their potential to help address the foreclosure crisis.
Currently, Deutsche Bank is challenging the authority of the Rhode Island bankruptcy court to implement this program.
On Friday, August 27, Sheldon participated in a walking tour of small businesses in Warwick to hear from business owners about how the tough economy has affected them, and about what they need to succeed and grow.

On July 14, Sheldon invited doctors, physicians, and other health care stakeholders from Rhode Island to Washington, D.C. to learn more about the Health Care Reform Bill and how it will affect Rhode Islanders. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, White House Health Reform Director Nancy-Ann DeParle, and Senator Chris Dodd gave inspiring keynote addresses, while many other panelists and leaders participated to make the event a resounding success.

On July 9th, Sheldon toured Quonnie Pound with Dr. John King, a professor at URI’s Graduate School of Oceanography, who is working with the Weekapaug Foundation for Conservation to monitor the health of the pound and the surrounding shoreline. Sheldon also met with local lobster fishermen in Galilee to observe the workings of a lobster fishing vessel.
