Washington, D.C. — Congressman Joseph Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx) and Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer participated in a tour of Woodside on the Move, Inc.’s graffiti removal efforts on Tuesday, August 3. Together, they saw firsthand how the $10,000 Congressman Crowley secured in Federal funding through his Crime Stoppers initiative has been put to use. Woodside on the Move, Inc. is a not-for-profit community development organization that promotes neighborhood stabilization, economic growth and improvement in the quality of life for those who live, attend school, or work in the Community Board area.
“Creating a safe and welcoming community is truly a collaborative effort, and Woodside on the Move has made great strides in bringing the neighborhood together to cultivate such an environment,” said Congressman Crowley. “I am pleased to see how the Federal funding I secured has been put to good use, as these beautification efforts create opportunity for business and improve the overall quality of life for Woodside’s families.”
“I would like to thank Woodside on the Move for their proactive involvement in restoring the quality of life in our neighborhoods by removing these eyesores,” said Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer. “Graffiti in our communities will not be tolerated and today's efforts are just the beginning of a community campaign to remove graffiti once and for all.”
Congressman Crowley secured the funds from the Department of Justice through the annual federal appropriations process. The organization is using the $10,000 obtained by Congressman Crowley to fund graffiti removal and other area beautification projects.
“Graffiti can paint an inaccurate portrait of a neighborhood as it gives the perception that the community is on the decline,” said Rosa Reyes, Executive Director of Woodside on the Move, Inc. “Our graffiti removal program empowers the youth involved by providing an opportunity to join their peers in a positive activity, all while improving the overall quality of the neighborhood for local businesses and residents. We applaud the efforts of Congressmen Crowley and the other Assembly and Council personnel who provide support and funding for this very important community effort.”
Congressman Crowley is a six-term member of the U.S. House of Representatives who sits on the exclusive Committee on Ways and Means, which has jurisdiction over Medicare, Social Security and many other issues involving seniors, as well as students. Crowley established the Crime Stoppers quality of life program in Fiscal Year 2002 to provide small grants to community groups and organizations that are working to reduce crime, make quality of life improvements, and strengthen families and communities across the Bronx and Queens. Over the last seven years, he has secured more than $1.1 million for the Crime Stoppers initiative.
