| Congressman Crowley Sends Best Wishes to India and Indian-Americans Everywhere on the 60th Anniversary of Republic |
| Washington, D.C. — On the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Indian Republic, Congressman Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx) sent best wishes to the people of India and Indian-Americans across New York and the United States. “It is my great pleasure to send my very best wishes to the people of India and Indian-Americans everywhere on this 60th Republic Day,” said Congressman Crowley. “The principles behind India’s constitution, ushered in 60 years ago today, serve as a shining example for the whole world. I also commend the 2.5 million Indian-Americans across the nation for contributing more and more every day to our great country. Indian-Americans are a vital and growing part of American families, communities, economy and governance.” Republic Day celebrates the enactment of the Indian constitution and the termination of British rule on January 26th, 1950. Mahatma Gandhi led India’s struggle for Independence, and Jawaharlal Nehru served as the country’s first Prime Minister. Congressman Crowley added, “I strongly believe that the United States-Indian relationship should and will serve as a key building block of U.S. foreign policy in the decades ahead. Working together, the United States and India will be a powerful force for positive change in the world.” Congressman Crowley is a member of the Subcommittee on the Middle East and South Asia in the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs, and was a key proponent of the U.S.-Indian civilian nuclear cooperation agreement. As a past co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian-Americans, Congressman Crowley has visited India eight times and has worked extensively at home and abroad to strengthen the great friendship between the United States and India. ### |
