Congressman Crowley Hosts Dominican Republic Ambassador

Queens, N.Y. – On Saturday, Congressman Joseph Crowley (D- the Bronx, Queens) held a public discussion with Roberto B. Saladin, the Dominican Republic Ambassador to the United States, and members of the community of Corona, Queens.  The event, which took place at the Dominico-American Society, brought together members of one of the United States’ rapidly-growing communities to discuss issues of importance to U.S.-D.R. relations.  In particular, the event focused on the needs of the Dominican and broader Latin American communities living in Queens and the Bronx, as well as the importance of maintaining strong ties between the United States and the Dominican Republic. 

“We are honored to have the esteemed Ambassador of the Dominican Republican right here in Queens at the Dominico-American Society,” said Congressman Crowley.  “The people of our two nations have strong family, cultural and historical ties, and by working together we can help build peace and greater understanding in the world.  I’m also proud of the work we have done in Congress to keep our commitment to the Bronx and Queens – including making college more affordable and health care more accessible.”      

“I appreciate the commitment and support for Dominican Republic shown by Congressman Crowley and the people of New York.  Congressman Crowley has worked to build relations between our two countries and peoples, and I’m glad to be here today to meet with the Congressman and the community in Queens. I look forward to working together with the Congressman in the future,” said Roberto B. Saladin, the Dominican Republic Ambassador to the United States.

Dr. Roberto Saladin became the Dominican Republic’s Ambassador to the United States in March 2009, presenting his credentials to President Obama in May 2009.   A respected diplomat who is fluent in Spanish, English, French and German, he has also published two books on national finance.  He also produced a television show in the Dominican Republic. 

The Dominico-American Society is a non-profit, public service organization based in Queens that provides free services, education and support to individuals and families of all backgrounds.  Among other initiatives, DAS programs include English as a second language, GED preparation and programs for children who need a positive and constructive place to go after school.  Congressman Crowley spearheaded a successful initiative to secure Congressional funds in 2008 that helped DAS create a computer lab for members of the community. 

The event with the Dominican Republic Ambassador is part of Crowley’s efforts to bring prominent leaders to New York’s 7th Congressional District in Queens and the Bronx.  Last month, he hosted the Ambassador and former Prime Minister of Korea in the Bronx, and prior to that the Ambassadors from Ukraine, Colombia and France visited New York’s 7th Congressional District at Crowley’s request.

Congressman Crowley, a six-term member of the U.S. House of Representatives, represents New York’s 7th Congressional district (Queens, the Bronx), which is one of the most ethnically diverse districts in the United States.  The Congressman serves on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, which oversees U.S. international relations.
