| Crowley Condemns Burma Junta for Rejecting Suu Kyi Appeal for Freedom |
| Washington, D.C. — Congressman Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx) today condemned Burma’s military regime for rejecting a legal appeal by the country’s Nobel Peace Prize recipient Aung San Suu Kyi. A successful appeal would have freed Suu Kyi from her 14 year house arrest. She has been locked up under house arrest for 14 of the past 20 years, even while leading her political party the National League for Democracy to a landslide election victory in 1990. "Aung San Suu Kyi's 14 year imprisonment has been a sham from day one," said Congressman Crowley. "The cruel military junta must face consequences for violating the human rights of the Burmese people. It is time for the United States to fully implement the Tom Lantos Block Burmese JADE Act, which includes increased targeted sanctions against officials in Than Shwe’s military regime.” Congressman Crowley is a six-term member on the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs and a member of the Subcommittee on the Middle East and South Asia. Congressman Crowley has a long track-record advocating for human rights in Burma, most recently spearheading the effort to award Aung San Suu Kyi the Congressional Gold Medal and to secure passage of the Tom Lantos Block Burmese JADE Act. ### |
