| Crowley Turns Up the Volume on LGA Neighborhood Noise Issue; Hosts Meeting Between Chair of U.S. House Transportation Committee and Port Authority Officials on LGA Noise Abatement Issue Crowley pushes Federal officials to address persistent noise nuisance for homes in region surrounding LaGuardia Airport in Queens |
| (Washington, DC) – Congressman Joseph Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx) released the following statement after meeting last week with officials from the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey (PANYNJ) and the chair of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives, Congressman Jim Oberstar. Congressman Crowley hosted the meeting to bring together key Federal decision makers on the issue of noise abatement for homes near La Guardia Airport in Queens. Community leaders, including Congressman Crowley, have been calling on officials to study the effect of airport noise on residences in the La Guardia area, including Jackson Heights and Corona, and to fund the mitigation of noise in local homes through soundproofing. “I am adamant that the Port Authority find a way to reduce the effect of noise on neighborhoods surrounding La Guardia Airport,” said Congressman Joe Crowley. “Airport noise is far more than a nuisance -- it can increase cardiovascular risk, cause long-term sleep deprivation, and negatively impact concentration for children at home and at school." “I thank Chairman Oberstar for meeting with Port Authority officials on this critical issue and look forward to working with him to find a solution on behalf of my Queens constituents. Noise pollution needs to be taken just as seriously as other types of pollution and I will continue to work with stakeholders at all levels to fully address the issue in the La Guardia region.” Congressman Crowley is the six-term U.S. Representative from the 7th District of New York that includes sections of Queens near La Guardia Airport. He has worked extensively with community leaders, Federal officials and representatives from New York City and State to promote noise abatement for those with homes affected by noise created by La Guardia Airport. ### |
