| Crowley Statement Strongly Supporting UN Declaration on House Arrest of Aung San Suu Kyi UN declares house arrest of Nobel Laureate a violation of both Burmese and international law |
| Washington, D.C. — Today, Congressman Joseph Crowley (NY-7) released the following statement in strong support of the announcement by the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention declaring the house arrest of Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, which is an independent and impartial body of the UN Human Rights Council, comprised of experts from Chile, Pakistan, Russian Federation, Senegal and Spain, found Suu Kyi’s arrest to be illegal according to both Burmese and international law. “I applaud the UN for making this long over-due announcement, and strongly support the release of Aung San Suu Kyi,” said Congressman Joe Crowley. “I have worked for many years to raise awareness of Ms. Suu Kyi’s efforts to bring democracy to the people of Burma. I hope that the junta takes seriously the international community’s condemnation by releasing Ms. Suu Kyi immediately and providing her with the freedom to advocate for free speech and democracy in Burma.” Congressman Crowley is a six-term member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs in the U.S. House of Representatives. He is the author and chief sponsor of legislation signed into law last year granting Ms. Suu Kyi the Congressional Gold Medal in support of her extensive work to secure freedom and democracy for the people of Burma. ### |
