Crowley, Landrieu, Rosie O’Donnell Team Up to Help Children in Foster Care
Crowley, Landrieu introduce bill to connect children in foster care with mentors and raise public awareness for programs

(Washington, D.C.) – As part of National Foster Care Month, Congressman Joseph Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx) will join United States Senator Mary L. Landrieu and television/movie star Rosie O’Donnell tomorrow, May 6, 2009, to unveil legislation to connect children in foster care with mentors and bring attention to the needs of foster children and families around the United States.  
 
At an 11 a.m. press conference, Rosie O’Donnell and Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute (CCAI) Foster Youth Intern Alumni will join Sen. Landrieu and Rep. Crowley to unveil the Foster Care Mentoring Act of 2009. This legislation would connect children in foster care with responsible, caring adults by authorizing $15 million to establish statewide foster care mentoring programs. The bill would also provide $4 million to begin a national public awareness campaign for mentor recruitment programs and allow up to $20,000 in federal student loan forgiveness for those who volunteer to mentor a child in care.
