Crowley Condemns Arrest and Jailing of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi
Burmese military junta arrests Nobel Laureate and Congressional Gold Medal awardee

(Washington, DC) – Today, Congressman Joseph Crowley (NY-7) released the following statement strongly condemning the Burmese junta for arresting and jailing Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, Nobel Laureate and recipient of the Congressional Gold Medal for her extensive work to secure freedom and democracy for the people of Burma:

“The Burmese military junta must immediately release Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and give up their illegal campaign of intimidation against her,”
said Congressman Joe Crowley.  “Daw Suu Kyi is a committed to freedom and democracy, and she should not be either under house arrest, jailed or punished for her noble efforts.  I am also concerned about her current state of health and the military junta should allow her doctor to examine and provide her with the necessary medical treatment.  This is another example of the Burmese dictatorship’s attempt to stay in power at all cost – including at the expense of the people of Burma.”

Congressman Crowley is a six-term member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs in the U.S. House of Representatives.  He is the author and chief sponsor of legislation signed into law last year granting Daw Suu Kyi the Congressional Gold Medal in support of her extensive work to secure freedom and democracy for the people of Burma.
