Washington, D.C. — Congressman Joseph Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx) hosted women from across the 7th Congressional District of New York today at the New York Botanical Garden to celebrate Women’s History Month and to honor women leaders for their achievements in the community. The 6th Annual Women’s History Event honored two local leaders for their commitment to the Bronx and Queens community: Nayibe Nuñez-Berger and Rosemary De Luca. Congressman Carolyn McCarthy, a national leader on reducing gun violence and seven term member of the House of Representatives, was featured as the keynote speaker. “I am proud to celebrate Women’s History Month today with such extraordinary and accomplished women from across New York. Nayibe and Rosemary have been true leaders in our community – working tirelessly to improve the Bronx and Queens and serving as positive role models for young women everywhere,” said Congressman Joseph Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx). “I am also honored my colleague and fellow New Yorker, Carolyn McCarthy, was able to be a part of our celebration of women and their accomplishments. She’s been a true leader in the House – championing issues to keep children and families safe and successful – and I am proud to call her a friend.” Guests were treated to remarks by special guest and keynote speaker, Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy. Congresswoman McCarthy came to Congress in 1996 with the determination to rid our country of gun violence. In the twelve years since then, she has become respected far and wide for her energy, her advocacy, and her commitment to issues that benefit not only her constituents in New York, but around the country. Aside from her unequaled leadership on reducing gun violence, Congresswoman McCarthy has worked to make access to quality education and health care a national priority. As a senior member of the House Education and Labor Committee, she recently became Chair of the Healthy Families and Communities Subcommittee, where she has taken the lead on efforts to improve schools and child nutrition, increase low-income home energy assistance, and improve job training. Congresswoman McCarthy has been honored as one of the “50 Most Effective Legislators” and one of the Ladies’ Home Journal’s “100 Most Important Women.” “The month of March is dedicated to recognizing the efforts and accomplishments of women. This year, we have a lot to celebrate. The U.S. House of Representatives is being lead by its first female Speaker and women like our former U.S. Senator, Hillary Clinton, are breaking new ground and shattering glass ceilings. I congratulate Nayibe Nuñez-Berger and Rosemary De Luca for their exceptional contributions to our community and thank my friend Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy for her inspiring remarks.” In addition to remarks by Congresswoman McCarthy, two women of the 7th Congressional District were honored for their commitment and exceptional service to the community – Nayibe Nuñez-Berger and Rosemary De Luca.
