Crowley, Congressional Musicians Caucus join award-winning artists to celebrate the Music and Arts Service Movement

(Washington, D.C.)
-Congressman Crowley joined members of the Congressional Musicians Caucus and award-winning musicians Wednesday evening at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage to kick off the new Congressional Musicians Caucus and celebrate the recently-enacted national service initiative for artists.  The “informance” was hosted by the Center for American Progress and Music National Service. A lifelong musician, Congressman Crowley has been a leader for music and arts service in the House of Representatives, founding the Congressional Musicians Caucus and authoring the new Musician and Artists Corps initiative signed into law by President Obama as part of the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act. The archived webcast of the performance can be found on the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage Archives.

This is a great stage to share with colleagues and fellow musicians in celebration of the great impact musicians and artists can have by serving our nation,” said Congressman Crowley. “Thank you to the hosts – the Center for American Progress and Music National Service – for their work in putting together this great ‘informance’.  I look forward to working with them in my capacity as the chair of the newly-created Congressional Musicians Caucus to create more opportunities for artisans and musicians to serve our country and to begin a discussion on how to engage music in our public policy for education, health care, diplomacy, and civic engagement.”

Hosted by the Center for American Progress and Music National Service, the hour-long program featured local and national artists, including several musically-gifted members of the Congressional Musicians Caucus:
·    Congressman Joseph Crowley (NY-7) on guitar
·    Congressman Dennis Moore (KS-03) on guitar
·    Peggo Horstmann Hodes, wife of Congressman Paul Hodes (NH-1) singing
·    Josh and Cora Dunham, the husband & wife rhythm section for Grammy award winner Prince
·    The Sitar Arts Center’s Saints Band
·    Fred Yonnet, noted harmonica player
·    Kiff Gallagher, CEO and Founder of Music National Service
·    Shirley Sagawa, Visiting Fellow at the Center for American Progress

Congressman Crowley led the creation of the Musician and Artists Corps as part of the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, signed into law this week by President Barack Obama. A lifelong musician, Congressman Crowley is honored to serve as the inaugural chair of the Congressional Musicians Caucus and will work with other musical members of Congress to raise awareness of the great benefits of music and music education. Representing sections of Queens and the Bronx, Congressman Crowley is a guitarist and six-term member of the U.S. House of Representatives.
