Washington, D.C. — Today, Congressman Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx), one of nine chief deputy whips, issued the statement below following the passage of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act. The bill passed the House by a vote of 268 to 160 and will now move to the Senate. The James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act will help the thousands of people who are now suffering from health issues as a result of their heroic actions on September 11th and the days following. Congressman Crowley is the only member of Congress who lost a family member on September 11th, Battalion Chief John Moran.

“I applaud today’s passage of the 9/11 Health and Compensation Act. This bill will provide much needed health care to the thousands of firefighters, policemen, rescue workers and medical personnel who, without hesitation, rushed to Ground Zero to search for survivors and to clean the site. And now, because of their service to our nation, these brave men and women face serious health issues.

“Nine years after terrorists took the lives of close to 3,000 of our fellow Americans, we can finally fulfill the ultimate tribute to the surviving heroes. I thank Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer for their tireless efforts to bring this bill to the floor today. Without their leadership, today's vote would not have been a success. I now urge the Senate to move swiftly to pass this legislation. President Obama has pledged his commitment to sign the bill into law, and we should not ask our 9/11 heroes to wait any longer for the care they need and deserve. They have waited far too long already.”

Congressman Crowley is the six-term representative from the 7th Congressional District of New York, which includes sections of Queens and the Bronx. He is a member of the powerful Ways and Means Committee and the Committee on Foreign Affairs.
