Congressman Crowley Kicks-Off National Hispanic Heritage Month
Special Guest Ken Padilla Joins Crowley in Celebrating Hispanic Culture

Washington, D.C. On Monday, September 13, Congressman Joseph Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx) kicked-off National Hispanic Heritage Month during an event with the Bronx Latino community. Special guest Ken Padilla, District Leader for the 76th Assembly District, joined Crowley to honor the rich and vibrant Hispanic culture and pay tribute to the extraordinary contributions made by Latinos across the 7th Congressional District.

“I am honored to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with the Bronx Latino community and Ken Padilla, a dedicated community advocate,” said Congressman Crowley. “Latinos are a vital part of the fabric of our communities throughout New York and across the country. I urge all Americans to take time this month to recognize and remember the many accomplishments of the Latino community and learn about the rich culture and traditions that, in many ways, have shaped our country.”

“Considering the tremendous contributions from Latinos throughout history and in my community, I am truly humbled by this honor, especially when it comes from a true public servant, Congressman Crowley,” said District Leader Padilla.

About National Hispanic Heritage Month

Each year, Americans celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month September 15 through October 15 to celebrate the history, culture and contributions of Hispanic Americans. The observation began in 1968 when Congress authorized President Lyndon B. Johnson to designate Hispanic Heritage Week the week of September 15 to commemorate the independence of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days September 16 and September 18, respectively.
In 1988, the week was expanded to a month-long celebration to honor the cultures and traditions of Americans with heritage tied to Spain, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America and the Caribbean.

Congressman Crowley is the six-term representative from the 7th Congressional District of New York, which includes sections of Queens and the Bronx. He sits on the powerful Ways and Means Committee and the Committee on Foreign Affairs.
