Washington, D.C. — Today, Congressman Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx), one of nine chief deputy whips, issued the statement below following the announcement by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer that the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act would come to the floor for a vote next week. The bill would help the thousands of people who are now suffering from health issues as a result of their heroic actions on September 11th and the days and months following the attack. Congressman Crowley is the only member of Congress who lost a family member on September 11th, Battalion Chief John Moran.

“I applaud the decision to bring the 9/11 Health and Compensation Act to the floor next week for a vote. This bill is long overdue and it is time to fulfill our commitment to the thousands of 9/11 heroes who are now suffering from serious health issues as a result of their brave service.

“This legislation must be considered free of partisan politics. Next week, I hope my Republican colleagues will agree and allow for an up or down vote on the merits of the bill, and the merits alone. This legislation is about helping those who helped our nation. Those who served in the days and months after September 11th did so for the benefit of the entire country, and we owe them a vote that respects their efforts.”

Congressman Crowley is the six-term representative from the 7th Congressional District of New York, which includes sections of Queens and the Bronx. He is a member of the powerful Ways and Means Committee and the Committee on Foreign Affairs.
