Congressman Crowley Honors 2009 Hispanic Heritage Month

Washington, D.C. Congressman Joseph Crowley (D- the Bronx, Queens) released the following statement in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month 2009, from September 15 through October 15, 2009:

“Today, I join my friends and neighbors from across the Bronx and Queens to kick-off a month-long celebration honoring Hispanic heritage and the Latino community.  Latinos are the fastest growing ethnic group in the nation.  There is no doubt that Hispanics and Latin culture have enriched our nation – contributing to business, education, arts, science and government.

“Our community can be particularly proud this year.  We helped to raise the first Latina Supreme Court Justice, our own Judge Sonia Sotomayor.  Her swearing in just a few weeks ago was a tremendous moment for New York and the nation and we should continue to celebrate this achievement throughout the year.

“I encourage everyone to take a few minutes in the next few weeks to celebrate the rich and vibrant Hispanic culture in their own communities.  I am proud to pay tribute this month to the extraordinary contributions made by Latinos throughout our history and across the 7th Congressional District.”
