Post-Secondary Education
These days, a post-secondary education is more important than ever. Unfortunately, it has become increasingly out of reach for too many Minnesota families. College tuition hikes have placed such a large burden on Minnesota students and families that the average Minnesota student graduates college with over $25,000 in debt.
That's why I support increasing federal student aid. We should increase tax credits to help middle class families send their kids to college. We should also restore Pell Grants to help low-income and middle class students pay for college. Thirty years ago, the maximum Pell Grant covered 77% of the cost of attending the average four-year public college; these days, it only covers 35%. I helped lead the fight in the Senate to pass the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010, which will both increase the Pell Grant and reduce the deficit by ending wasteful subsidies to banks.
