CIO AUTHORITY LEGISLATION PASSES FULL COMMITTEE MARKUP

Washington, D.C. — The House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs held a markup of H.R. 4061, the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (VA) Information Technology Management Improvement Act, which will improve the management of IT within VA.  The bill will give the VA Chief Information Officer (CIO) authority over the VA’s IT budget, as well as control in the oversight of policies, procedures, personnel and assets.  H.R. 4061 will also require the VA Secretary to submit a report to Congress that details the IT funds requested by the Administration in any fiscal year budget submitted to Congress.   

CHAIRMAN BUYER HOLDS IT SUMMIT TO ADDRESS CHANGING TECH NEEDS IN VA

Washington, D.C. — On Thursday, September 29, 2005, Chairman Buyer held a summit on information technology (IT) with 36 corporations and consulting firms in attendance to discuss the reorganization of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) IT infrastructure.  Chairman Buyer and Ranking Member Evans, along with other distinguished members of the Committee    on Veterans' Affairs will be introducing the “Department of Veterans Affairs Information Technology Management Improvement Act of 2005,” which will provide the VA Chief Information Officer (CIO) with authority over budget, personnel and assets.  Companies in attendance offered their suggestions and commentary on the draft legislation to restructure VA IT authority.
