Washington, D.C. – Earlier this month, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Veterans Affairs Steve Buyer and Congressman Tim Walz introduced H.R. 2243, the Surviving Spouses’ Benefit Improvement Act of 2009, which would increase Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) by twelve percent and eliminate the offset between DIC and the Survivor Benefit Plan.

Washington, D.C. – Today, the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee approved a bill that would provide compensation to individuals who served in the U.S. Merchant Marine during World War II, but rejected by one vote, an amendment by Ranking Member Steve Buyer to cover similar veterans’ groups such as the Flying Tigers and the Women Air Force Service Pilots (WASPS).

Rep. Buyer and Rep. Waltz introduce H.R. 2243

Washington, D.C. - Today, Congressmen Steve Buyer and Tim Walz introduced legislation to increase the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) benefit paid to widows and widowers whose spouses died while on active military duty or as the result of a service connected injury or illness. The bill would also eliminate an unjust offset between the VA benefit and a military benefit for survivors.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) will begin taking applications for the new Post 9/11 GI Bill on May 1, 2009.  The new program is very complex so service members who are eligible for the Montgomery GI Bill and are considering converting to the Post 9/11 GI Bill should compare the benefits of the two programs to determine which best suits the service member’s particular situation.
