WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Mike Michaud announced the creation of the Congressional Composites Caucus.  Given the importance of composites and composite manufacturing to Maine and the country, Michaud will join other founding members of the caucus to ensure the industry has a strong voice in Congress.

Composites are materials made up of two or more substances with varying physical characteristics where the substances maintain their own identity while creating a new product.  Some common composite products that are seen every day include newer-model aircraft, cars, boats, RVs, skis, and golf clubs, as well as a growing number of aerospace and military products used in theatre in Afghanistan and Iraq.

“Composites are representative of American ingenuity, and represent a meaningful part of America’s 21st century economy,” said Michaud.  “The Advanced Structures and Composites Center at the University of Maine is a national leader in composites development.  It has developed advanced systems like ballistic shielding for military tents and disaster-resistant paneling for citizens affected by natural catastrophes. The establishment of the Composites Caucus will help to ensure that institutions like the University of Maine receive the funding that they need to research and develop the materials and technologies of America’s future.”

The Composites Caucus will allow Members of Congress access to up-to-date information on how the composites industry is aiding the economy nationally and in each Congressional District.  At the same time, the Caucus will be a vehicle for Members to work together on issues affecting the industry as a whole.
