Michaud Announces $11.4 Million for “Wood-To-Energy” Projects in Maine PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, June 11 2009
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Mike Michaud praised the USDA Forest Service’s announcement that Maine will receive $11.4 million in Wood-To-Energy grant funding.  According to the Forest Service, this funding could support the conversion of an estimated 15 public buildings from fossil fuel heating systems to efficient, renewable energy heating systems.

“The Wood-To-Energy Grant funding will create jobs and help create markets for forest products,” said Michaud.  “These funds will assist several counties and municipalities convert their buildings to renewable energy from woody biomass.  The granting of these Wood-To-Energy funds is an excellent investment in our state.  It also has the added benefit of reducing our fossil fuel energy consumption and reducing our country’s reliance on foreign oil.”

The State of Maine, working with the eligible counties, will determine the public buildings that will receive the funding for conversion from fossil fuels to renewable biomass fuels.  The eligible counties are: Aroostook, Franklin, Hancock, Penobscot, Piscataquis, Somerset, and Washington.
