Washington, DC
– Representative Steve Rothman (D-NJ), a member of the House Appropriations Committee, continued his efforts to secure Social Security benefits for the nation’s elderly by becoming an original cosponsor of a resolution declaring the sense of the House that the retirement age under Title II of the Social Security Act should not be raised (H.Res. 1670), introduced on September 28, 2010.

“It is our duty to protect the rights and benefits of our senior citizens. Raising the Social Security retirement age would force a number of seniors to work beyond their physical abilities or fall below the poverty line. Many elderly Americans depend on their Social Security benefits as a main source of income, and raising the retirement age would have drastic consequences on their lives,” said Rep. Rothman. “Senior citizens in our country spend their lives working and raising families, and they deserve financial protection.”

Numerous organizations support this legislation, including the Alliance for Retired Americans, the League of Rural Voters, The Arc, United Cerebral Palsy, the National Council of Women’s Organizations, the National Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers.
