(Washington, DC) – With the vote of Representative Steve Rothman, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 847, the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act on September 29, 2010, 268-160. Representative Rothman (D-NJ), a member of the House Appropriations Committee, released the following statement lauding its passage:

“In the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, Americans vowed to never forget the innocent lives lost that fateful day, or the selfless sacrifice of the brave first responders who rushed toward the burning towers to help. This important legislation honors our promise to care for those brave men and women – firefighters, rescue workers, police officers, EMTs and construction and cleanup workers – who helped our nation pick up the pieces and begin to recover after that tragic day. Thousands of these first responders and survivors exposed to the toxins of Ground Zero are now sick, and in need of help. Many of them are our friends and neighbors from Northern New Jersey. This important legislation will provide them with the long-term, comprehensive health care and compensation that they deserve.”

Specifically, the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act will:
• Provide funding for a Health Program to monitor and treat first responders and community residents for health conditions related to the terrorist attacks.
• Reopen the September 11, 2011 Victim Compensation Fund to provide monetary compensation for those physically injured by the attacks or by response activities and debris removal.

The legislation is fully paid for by closing tax loopholes for corporations that are dodging American taxes through foreign tax havens.
