Washington, DC – “Absentee Voting Week” will take place from September 27 to October 4, 2010. The week represents the Department of Defense’s effort to encourage all citizens voting under the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act to obtain absentee ballots if they have not yet received them.
“I applaud the Department of Defense in its efforts to ensure representation of our citizens serving abroad. Members of our armed forces and other Department of Defense personnel should be guaranteed the ability to exercise their right to vote in the democracy they risk their lives to defend,” said Rep. Steve Rothman (D-NJ), a member of the House Appropriations Defense Subcommittee.
Commanders and voting assistance officers will take this opportunity to educate citizens serving abroad on how to fill out their absentee ballots while emphasizing the importance of returning their vote by mail, e-mail, or fax where allowed. The Federal Assistance Voting Program will simplify the voting process by providing military members, their families and overseas voters’ electronic alternatives to requesting, receiving or returning their ballots.
