Washington, DC - Representative Steve Rothman (D-NJ), a member of the House Appropriations Defense, and State and Foreign Operations Subcommittees, and cosponsor of the Iran Sanctions Act, released the following statement:
Today's overwhelming passage of the Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability, and Divestment Act by the U.S. House of Representatives sends a very clear message to all countries and companies that you can either do business with the U.S. government or with the government headed by the brutish, tyrannical, and deranged President of Iran, but not both. The Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability, and Divestment Act is the strongest Iran sanctions bill passed by Congress - ever!
We must use all of the tools available to us to ensure that we prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapons capability. A world in which President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will succeed in realizing his long-stated objective of wiping Israel off the map, and threatening U.S. troops and other allies in the region, is unacceptable.
Today's vote comes on the heels of months of aggressive U.S.-led negotiations in the United Nations that have yielded a new sanctions regime against Iran that will allow for even greater sanctions against Iran's financial, military, and energy sectors.
