(Washington, DC) – Today, the House of Representatives unanimously passed legislation that gives U.S. taxpayers the opportunity to file charitable contributions to the Haiti relief efforts on their itemized 2009 charitable tax returns instead of filing the contributions on their tax returns next year. Congressman Steve Rothman (D-NJ) co-authored HR 4462 to help the Haitian people and released the following statement:

As we learn more about the consequences of the terrible earthquake that struck Haiti last week, I am horrified by the unspeakable human toll of this natural disaster. From finding the bodies still buried in the rubble to helping provide emergency medical care, we must do all that we can to provide aid to the Haitian people. The United States has taken a leading role in the international response to this disaster and this important bipartisan legislation takes one more step toward helping those in need.

There has already been a strong outpouring of support from New Jerseyans and I encourage my constituents who wish to help the Haitian people to contribute to the relief efforts by supporting the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund at http://clintonbushhaitifund.org. In order to help family members affected by this tragedy, my offices in New Jersey and Washington, DC remain available to help in any way we can at (201) 646-0808 and (202) 225-5061 respectively.

The thoughts and prayers of myself, my family and the people of New Jersey’s Ninth District will continue to go out to the Haitian people and the Haitian American community.
