Washington, DC – On November 20, 2010, Representative Steve Rothman (D-NJ), a member of the House Appropriations Committee, keynoted and announced the new name of the Hackensack Meadowlands Wetlands Preservation Concert Series held annually at the Williams Center in Rutherford, New Jersey.
The series of environmental concerts was officially renamed “The Pete and Toshi Seeger Hackensack Meadowlands Wetlands Preservation Concert Series,” in honor of Pete and Toshi Seeger. This was in recognition of the Seegers’ important work protecting the environment and their dedication to the preservation of the Hackensack Meadowlands in New Jersey. Rep. Rothman also recognized Captain Bill Sheehan, the Hackensack Riverkeeper and a lifelong resident of the Hackensack River area, for his leading role in fighting for the environment and continued work in protecting and restoring the Hackensack Meadowlands.
In accepting his award at the concert, Captain Sheehan thanked Rep. Rothman for being instrumental in saving the last 8,400 acres of the Hackensack Meadowlands from development and having secured $10.72 million in federal funds, to date, to acquire those acres and restore this vital ecosystem.
