Veterans Affairs

Congressman Scalise believes that we owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to our nation’s veterans. Throughout American history, the men and women of the armed forces have answered their nation’s call to battle. These men and women have bravely sacrificed for their country and defended its freedom while risking their lives and livelihoods. Congressman Scalise is grateful for the courage veterans have displayed and the sacrifices they have given in order to protect America and its freedom.

Scalise has made protecting and providing for America’s veterans a top priority. He is working to ensure that veterans receive the benefits they deserve and access to quality healthcare. Congressman Scalise believes that the Veterans' Affairs (VA) Health Care System should be fully funded and should provide the best care available for America’s veterans. America’s veterans have served their country with honor; it is only fitting that Congress serve them with the same honor.

As a member of the Veterans Affairs Committee, Congressman Scalise is a vocal advocate in Congress for legislation to support veterans and their families. He is using his position on the VA Committee to fight for veterans in Louisiana and throughout the United States. Through his seat on the Subcommittee on Economic Opportunity, Congressman Scalise is also working to ensure that America’s veterans have opportunities available when they finish their service and have an easier transition into civilian life.

Scalise has introduced and passed a resolution honoring America’s World War II veterans. H. Res. 1235 expresses support for the designation of National D-Day Remembrance Day, and recognizes the spirit, courage, and sacrifice of the men and women who fought and won World War II. It also honors the National World War II Museum in New Orleans, Louisiana. H. Res. 1235 passed the House of Representatives 406-0 on June 11, 2008.

Congressman Scalise has cosponsored H.R. 3047, the Veterans Claims Processing Innovation Act of 2007. This legislation seeks to improve the processing of claims for benefits administered by VA so veterans will receive the benefits in a more efficient manner. Scalise also cosponsored H. Res. 336, a resolution honoring the sacrifices and contributions made by disabled American veterans.

In addition, Scalise has voted for legislation that will improve access to healthcare for veterans in southeast Louisiana. H.R. 5856, the Medical Facility Authorization and Lease Act of 2007 authorized an additional $325 million dollars for the Southeast Louisiana VA Hospital that was closed down due to damage caused by Hurricane Katrina. This legislation brought the full authorization for the replacement VA hospital to $625 million, which has already been appropriated.
