Agriculture

Agriculture was a critical building block in America’s foundation and has played a crucial role in the culture and economy of Louisiana and the First Congressional District. The First District is blessed with an abundance of agriculture resources, and Congressman Steve Scalise understands the importance of protecting these invaluable resources.

Hurricane Katrina wreaked havoc on our area’s agriculture industry. Nearly 60% of all timber in Washington, Tangipahoa, and St. Tammany Parishes was either severely damaged or destroyed. In addition, Katrina put a huge strain on our dairy and strawberry farmers and nurseries.

As energy and other input costs rise, our farmers are struggling every day to maintain their operations. Congressman Scalise will work with his colleagues in Congress to bring down energy prices. Scalise has introduced the "GAS Act," which will lower the price of fuel by increasing America’s supply of domestic oil and gas and exploring alternative energy sources, such as oil shale and tar sands. Scalise has also co-sponsored legislation that will increase America’s refining capacity and explore other alternative sources of energy.

In addition, Congressman Scalise has co-sponsored legislation to repeal the "death tax," which has adversely affected family farmers who want to pass down their family farms to their heirs.

America was founded on the strength of agricultural production. It is this strength that has led to America becoming one of the most prosperous countries in the world.
