Many Louisiana residents' homes have been infected with toxic Chinese drywall and the appropriate action needs to be taken to provide them with the relief they deserve.
As a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee's Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection, Scalise has worked with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and other federal agencies to thoroughly investigate the toxic Chinese drywall issue and recommend solutions for the families affected. He has also urged the Department of Housing and Urban Development to approve and implement a program created by the Louisiana Recovery Authority to provide funding to help families whose homes contain toxic Chinese drywall.
In December, Scalise worked with other Members of Congress to pass H. Con. Res 197, a resolution that encourages banks and mortgage servicers to work with families affected by toxic Chinese drywall to allow temporary leniency without penalty on payments on their home mortgages. Scalise will continue to work to ensure that the manufacturers of toxic Chinese drywall are held accountable, and that those affected by this toxic drywall are provided with the answers and relief they deserve.
Data compiled by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) shows more than 400 Louisiana homeowners have reported toxic Chinese Drywall in their homes as of December 3, 2009. If you suspect your house may contain toxic Chinese Drywall, contact the Louisiana Recovery Authority, the CPSC, or Congressman Scalise'’s office at (202) 225-3015.
