The Switch to DTV

What is DTV and when is the switch happening?
The latest generation of television broadcasting is in a digital format that delivers crystal clear pictures and sound as well as more programming choices. This over-the-air technology, similar to a computer, has the capability of transmitting pictures over the airwaves in data bits. High definition broadcasting will be available for those viewers with HD sets. Digital TelevisionDTV special features include interactive capabilities and data services such as enhanced closed captioning. After February 17, 2009, television stations will only broadcast in the digital format. It is important to prepare for the switch because the upgrade is advantageous. Households that do not receive a digital signal will risk losing reception.

Who will be affected by the switch to DTV?
Viewers who receive free broadcast television signals through antennas on television sets that are equipped with analog tuners will be affected by the switch to DTV. These viewers will most likely need to upgrade their system. Close to 20 million households receive free broadcast television in their homes so it is critical to be alert to this significant change. Oppositely, consumers who pay for TV services (cable, satellite, telephone company television services) will not be affected by this technological advancement.

How do I upgrade to DTV?
The upgrade process can be completed in three different steps. A DTV converter box can be purchased that plugs into your existing analog TV set. This will allow you to continue to receive free television reception, however, the boxes cost between $40-70. If you plan your purchase ahead of time, you can use a government funded $40 coupon toward the price of the box. Another option is to purchase a new television set that comes complete with a digital or Advanced Television Systems Committee tuner. This alternative would cost about $100, but no monthly fees would apply. A third option is to subscribe to a paid service such as cable, satellite, or a telephone company provider.

How do I know if I have an analog or digital television set?
A TV set must include a built-in Advanced Television Systems Committee tuner in order to receive over-the-air digital broadcast signals. Check the owner’s manual to determine if this feature is present in your current television set.

Is a special antenna necessary to receive DTV over-the-air?
In most cases, a great indoor or outdoor antenna will provide clear DTV reception. However, some channels may require a different antenna type, depending on the frequency band in which they are located.
