The Great Ape Conservation Act (H.R. 4416)
July 22, 2010 Full Committee Markup

Reporting H.R. 4416 out of Committee (Passed by Voice Vote)
This legislation extends the Great Ape Conservation Fund to finance projects to help conserve Great Apes (chimpanzees, gorillas, baboons, orangutans and gibbons) and would increase the authorization for the program from $5 million to $7.5 million a year.  Since becoming law, the highest amount ever requested for the program is $2 million and the most the program has never been appropriated is $2.5 million, in Fiscal Year 2010.  An appropriation of $7.5 million to the Great Ape Conservation Fund would almost triple the amount ever spent in one year on this program.

Chaffetz Amendment to Level-Fund Program at $5 million (View Roll Call Vote)
This amendment would save taxpayer dollars by level-funding the program at $5 million per year through FY 2015.
