Gering native and sixth-generation Nebraskan Adrian Smith was first sworn into office on January 5, 2007.  Congressman Smith currently sits on the House Agriculture Committee, House Natural Resources Committee, and the House Science and Technology Committee, where he serves as the top Republican on the Subcommittee on Technology and Innovation.

Through these committees - and his work with Members of Congress from across the political spectrum - Congressman Smith has tackled issues ranging from biofuels and other forms of domestic energy to transportation research and development to fashioning legislation protecting the rural America.

Public service has long been a priority for Congressman Smith.  While a student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, he interned in the Nebraska Governor's Office, and later served as a legislative page in the Nebraska Unicameral.  Upon graduating from college, he moved back to the Panhandle, where in 1994 he began serving his hometown as a member of the Gering City Council.

After four years of service on the City Council, Congressman Smith sought and won the District 48 seat in the Nebraska Unicameral, where he served for eight years.

Since being elected to the House of Representatives in 2006, Congressman Smith has traveled constantly through the Third District, which contains nearly 65,000 square miles and two time zones - larger than 27 states.  He makes it a standard practice each term to visit each of the 68 and a half counties in the Third District.

Congressman Smith is a member of the Leadership Institute's Congressional Advisory Board, the National Youth Leadership Council's Congressional Advisory Board, ThanksUSA's Congressional Advisory Board, and serves on the Board of Directors of the Nebraska State Historical Society Foundation.
