Bennett Welcomes Fall Interns to D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senator Bob Bennett (R-Utah) recently welcomed four interns to his office in Washington, D.C. where they will be working closely with the senator’s staff over the next four months to learn about the inner-workings of Congress.

“I am proud to have some of Utah’s best and brightest students working with me in the Senate.” said Bennett. “Internships provide a unique opportunity for these students to see firsthand our nation’s legislative workings. I hope this experience is a highlight of their academic careers and that they gain an increased appreciation for our policy process.”

Brady Cox, a native of Willard, is currently a senior at Utah State University majoring in broadcast journalism. He recently worked as a television news producer in Salt Lake City. He enjoys making movies and hopes to one day make a feature-length documentary. Cox plans to attend law school and practice media law.

Clarissa Kanell, of Beaver, is a recent political science graduate of Westminster College. During her time at Westminster, she received the Sterling Scholar Scholarship, was on the dean’s list, and participated in mock trial and Westminster Chamber Orchestra. Kanell is currently applying to law school and hopes to practice corporate law.

Jessica Payne from Laguna Niguel, California, recently graduated from Utah Valley University with a bachelor’s in political science. Payne was listed on the dean’s list numerous times. She hopes to use her internship to secure a job on Capitol Hill before studying for a master’s degree in international relations. Payne hopes to work as a policy analyst for a think tank. She has lived in China and is currently learning Mandarin.

Dave Peris from Lancaster, Pennsylvania will graduate this spring from the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University. Prior to law school, Peris completed a bachelor’s degree in geography and spent two years working as an urban planner. Following law school, he plans to work as legal counsel for a government agency. Peris is fluent in Spanish and Portuguese and has studied abroad in Spain. His wife, Sarah, and 18-month-old daughter, Madeline, have joined him in D.C. for the semester.

The interns will work with Sen. Bennett and his staff until mid-December.
